Formation's technology-leading ability to create metal matrix composites (MMC) for the production of parts featuring improved impact resistance, or for embedding reinforcing, sensor-based fibres, self-actuating systems and RFID tags, for instance, is being harnessed by at least two major ground-breaking development projects.

redirecting forces in impact situations   ceramic coated boron fibres embedded in copper and aluminium   Ultrasonic welding makes the use of mmc's very much easier than previously thought possible

A $3.8 million four-year co-operative agreement with the Army Research Laboratories is currently underway to not only capitalise on existing MMC work but also to explore the potential of Formation in terms of representing a low-cost, nett-shape processing alternative to complex hybrid materials, ranging from the micro to macro level.

In another project - phase one of work with the United States Department of Energy - Formation is creating novel thermal management designs with intricate cooling passages that would be impossible to fabricate by traditional means. The project involves embedding small sensor probes between material layers to generate real-time, in-situ thermal profiling.
